The Customer
Scottish Enterprise (SE) is Scotland´s main economic development agency and aims to deliver a significant, lasting effect on the Scottish economy. Scottish Development International (SDI) is the international arm of SE, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish Government. SE and SDI help build globally competitive sectors, attract new investment, and create a world-class business environment. Specialties include supporting business to grow, export, innovate and commercialize. Scottish Enterprise has app. 1100 employees and SDI has offices in 20 countries including in Copenhagen.

The challenge
SE/SDI wanted to explore the Over the Counter (OTC) market for Sweden and Denmark with the objective to have an understanding of the Medical Technology market as part of supporting Scottish MedTech companies with potential go-to-market opportunities and strategy.

Outcome
Based on in-depth desk research and market studies including interviews, two reports were prepared; one for the Danish OTC Medical Technology market and one for the Swedish OTC Medical Technology market.

The reports describe country specific structures and responsibilities, market size and trends, market understanding with sales channels, user and market segmentation. They also provide cases demonstrating possible market access opportunities. Additionally, the reports describe the regulative conditions that need to be taken into consideration prior to market access alongside reimbursement structures. The reports offer a self-evaluation readiness model to be used prior to market launch

AdoN Biomarkers, TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DENMARK - DTU ELECTRO

DTU is an independent university with education, research, public service, and innovation. The university, named the number 1 university in the Nordic countries harbors main activities in 19 institutions. One of these is DTU Electrical Engineering (Department of Electrical Engineering), which trains engineers in Electrical Engineering and Medicine & Technology. The university offers courses at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The Institute conducts research in biomedical engineering.

Commercializing research results obtained through collaboration between DTU Electrical and Glostrup Hospital. That is, (1) to study the market needs, (2) develop business model, incl. development plan, budget and financing plan, (3) to present the project to potential partners and investors, and (4) to establish a spin-out in one year. The project was sponsored by Copenhagen Spin-outs.

Market research respectively Denmark and abroad was conducted. Several business models were developed, one of which was selected, and was drawn up a development plan. The prototype was developed and produced with input from stakeholders in the hospitals and in the industry. The prototype was presented and received positive reactions from potential customers in Denmark and abroad. A regulatory plan and a business plan incl. the budget were prepared. Funding options were presented and searched. An organization for ”Adon Biomarkers" was established.

MiiSkin

Miiskin is a start-up company who has developed an app to empower users to take control of their own skin concerns. Users monitor their skin and moles over time via the special designed app, so they can contact their healthcare provider if something is out of the ordinary.

Miiskin is in the process of creating their business model. The first step in the journey was to test the interest level of users. Miiskin launched its app, and within just a few first months more than 50,000 users had downloaded the app. www.miiskin.com

eMedLink

eMEDlink a start-up company within health care, funded by venture capital, should develop a telemedicine platform that enable the patients with long-term conditions (LTCs) and chronic diseases to be treated at home, receiving the same care and treatment as if they were admitted into the hospital.

The telemedicine platform should enable clinicians in primary and secondary care to conduct secure, remote audio/visual consultations, and empower patients to take control of their personal care.

A Virtual monitoring system that could follow the patients closely, with virtual ward rounds and ad hoc consultations was developed, by a iterative development process, including patients, relative, doctors, nurses, IT developers, financial staff etc. The platform where tested and shoved that it helped reduce waiting times and costs associated with unplanned admissions, outpatient clinics and patient transport. Virtual monitoring also reduces the precedence of readmission following hospital discharge.

Logos Logit A/S

Logos Logit A/S, is an established company that excellences within data-logging and inventory control. E.g. Automatic monitoring of refrigerators and freezers (incubator when present) in hospitals. Automated surveillance supports the best possible storage of medicines and other sensitive samples, savings of manual workflows, ensuring proper storage of medication, and ensuring patient medication has an effect as expected (patient safety) as well as sensitive samples can be stored for optimal patient care and research.

Market analysis primary for named geographical markets including market description & segmentation, barriers & opportunities, customer mapping, stakeholder analysis, sales opportunities and value proposition, including the creation of a business plan for the coming five years. The objective of the plan was to include e.g.:

- Market description, market and customer segmentation & stakeholder analysis
- Buying decision criteria’s
- Market potentials / revenue models
- Identification of value drivers and unique value proposition
- Competitor analysis and differentiation positioning
- Sales models, branding and communication

A five year business plan was conducted including VOC from all stakeholders.

Det Borgernære Hospital

Det Borgernære Hospital is a user-driven telemedicine innovation project, where Herlev Hospital, Danske Patienter and companies such as eMedlink and CSC have worked with staff and patients from three different hospital departments.

The project is an example of a Public Private Innovation Cooperation (Offentlig Privat Innovations samarbejde). Together the parties have created three telecom based IT solutions for better communication and care for patients in the hospitals onwards.
